Songyang Academy is located at the southern foot of Mount Song, approximately 3 kilometers north of Dengfeng County. Outside the academy's gate stands a Tang Dynasty stone stele, believed to be inscribed by Li Linfu and over 1,200 years old, making it one of the finest stone stele sites in Songshan.
Songyang Academy is considered one of the four great academies, along with Juyang Academy ( also known as Yingtian Academy ) in Juzhou, Yuelu Academy in Hunan , and Bailudong Academy in Jiangxi . Neo-Confucian masters Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi lectured at the academy. Key cultural relics include the " General Cypress " from the Western Han Dynasty and the " Great Tang Stele " from the Tang Dynasty .
The first building of Songyang Academy is the Forefathers' Shrine, dedicated to the forefathers and sages associated with the academy. This is followed by the lecture hall, the Daotong Shrine, and finally the library. Flanking these buildings were originally the Cheng-Zhu Shrine , a library, and a study hall. The walls of the corridors within the courtyard are inlaid with inscriptions by scholars and poets throughout the ages, each with its own distinctive calligraphy. To the west, the courtyard houses portions of the teaching and examination halls of Songyang Academy from the Qing Dynasty.
