Puxi Ancient City is located in Puxi Village, Shanting Township, Bei'an Administrative Committee, on the southern part of Zhongmen Peninsula in Putian City, approximately 40 kilometers from downtown Putian. Construction began in 1387, the 20th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, and remains a relic of the Ming Dynasty's anti-Japanese war. The existing city wall is 1,335 meters long, with two well-preserved northeastern gates and the remains of the ancient city foundations remaining in the southwest section of the wall. Within the city walls are ancient temples and palaces, including the City God Temple and Tianfei Palace. Outside the city walls are the Bagua Well and a stone statue of Qi Jiguang. It is a Fujian Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Site and was designated a Fujian Provincial National Defense Education Base in 2007.
The ancient city of Puxi faces Meizhou Island across the sea. Puxi's ancient name was "Fuxi." In the first year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1368), to strengthen coastal defense and resist Japanese pirates, the Putian "Defending Thousand Households" was established, under the jurisdiction of the "Pinghai Guard." This Thousand Households unit was staffed by one fifth-rank official, two junior fifth-rank officials, and a garrison of 1,000 soldiers. In the 20th year of the Hongwu reign (1387), construction of military fortifications to defend against Japanese pirates began along the Fujian coast. That same year, stone materials from the "sea-suppressing dikes" at Dongjiao and Zhalang in Putian were demolished to build Pinghai City and Puxi City.
