Introducing Shaobo Ancient Town

Shaobo Ancient Town, located in Jiangdu District, Yangzhou City, is one of China's 1,000 famous historical and cultural towns, boasting over 1,600 years of history. Historical records indicate that the name Shaobo originated in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Xie An, then the governor of Yangzhou (a Qin Dynasty official equivalent to a provincial governor), felt marginalized and asked to resign to Buqiu. He built a dam to prevent flooding, saving the people from the devastation and becoming a legendary figure.

To commemorate Xie An, local residents changed the place's name, Buqiu, to Zhaobo. "Zhaobo" historically referred to a local official with outstanding political achievements. Later, the lake was renamed Zhaobo Lake. Later, "Zhao" was changed to "Shao." From then on, the resounding name "Shaobo" became known throughout the Jianghuai region of China.

In 2008, Shaobo was included in the fourth batch of China's famous historical and cultural towns. In 2014, the Shaobo Ming and Qing Dynasty Grand Canal Road, Shaobo Wharf Group, Shaobo Ancient Dike, Shaobo Old Ship Lock, and the Huaiyang Canal Main Line (Shaobo Section) were inscribed on the World Heritage List of the Grand Canal of China. Shaobo Ancient Town has the most heritage sites along the Grand Canal.
