It is a famous tourist attraction along the Jiangsu coast. Originally an island in the sea, it evolved into land through the course of many changes.
Yuntaishan, formerly known as Yuzhou Mountain, was later called Cangwu Mountain during the Tang and Song dynasties. Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai wrote, "The bright moon never returns, sinking into the azure sea; white clouds fill Cangwu with melancholy." Song Dynasty poet Su Shi wrote, "Dreary Cangwu on the sea, mountains; the abbot of Penglai is boundless." Both poems describe Yuntaishan. Originally a series of islands in the Yellow Sea, it was not connected to the mainland until the 18th century. This resulted in the formation of steep peaks, deep ravines, wondrous rock formations, and flat slopes, creating a unique and magical landscape. It is known as one of the "Four Famous Spiritual Sites in China." During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, Taoism flourished, attracting as many as 20,000 Taoists, earning the mountain the title of "Seventy-One Blessed Land."
The Yuntaishan Seaside Scenic Area, with its four major spatial advantages—cityscape, harborside gardens, seaside mountains, and scenic villages—was designated a Jiangsu Provincial Nature Reserve in 1986, a National Scenic Area in 1988, a National Forest Park in 1993, and a National AAAA-level Tourist Attraction in 2014. Its rich artistic conception of "landscape painting, pastoral poetry, and dreamlike love" has made it a true paradise, a paradise on earth, attracting numerous tourists for sightseeing, leisure, and vacations. It was designated a Provincial Nature Reserve in 1986, a National Scenic Area in 1988, and a National Forest Park in 1993.
The temperate monsoon climate offers four distinct seasons. From the summit, you can overlook the eastern harbor, the eastern and western islands, the eastern urban area, the rolling hills, and the vast ocean.
