The Gongyi City Museum is located southeast of the Yongzhao Mausoleum (the mausoleum of Emperor Renzong of the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhao Zhen), the fourth emperor of the Northern Song Dynasty. Founded in 1997, it officially opened on October 1, 2001. It is a modern, medium-sized museum, covering an area of ​​25 mu (approximately 16 acres), with a total investment of 23 million yuan and a total construction area of ​​12,300 square meters.

In September 2018, after the museum's self-evaluation and application, assessment by the provincial museum industry organization, expert review organized by the National Museum Evaluation Committee, and filing with the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the China Museums Association decided to approve Gongyi City Museum as the third batch of national second-level museums.
