The main hall of Chuzu Temple, located approximately 2 kilometers northwest of Shaolin Temple, was built to commemorate Bodhidharma's facing the wall, hence the name Mianbi Temple. Built during the Northern Song Dynasty, the temple is renowned for its rich and diverse stone carvings. The temple also houses over 40 steles and inscriptions by renowned calligraphers throughout history.
The Chuzu Temple comprises a main hall, a mountain gate, and a Thousand Buddha Pavilion. The main hall is the oldest surviving wooden structure in Henan Province. The twelve stone pillars within the temple are carved with images of musicians, children, flying birds, precious flowers, and peonies. The east, west, and north sides of the temple are covered in exquisite reliefs, primarily depicting people, animals, and birds, all vividly and lifelike.
The patterns carved on the altar in the main hall are the finest of the stone carvings in the hall. The pictures show lush flowers and plants, neat fields, wandering monks, passers-by waiting to be ferryed, ancient temples, towering pagodas, rushing rivers and small bridges on the rivers, which together form a tranquil and bright paradise.
