The Shaolin Temple's Sutra Library, also known as the Dharma Hall, is located on the central axis behind the Main Hall. It was used by eminent monks to lecture and store Buddhist scriptures. The library originally housed Bodhidharma's wall-facing stone, ritual instruments, and over 5,000 volumes of Buddhist scriptures and books, including the Ming Dynasty Tripitaka.
In 1928, the temple was burned down by Shi Yousan, destroying the Buddhist scriptures, martial arts books, and the stone image of Bodhidharma. Only the temple's foundation and 14 stone pillars remain. The Shaolin Temple's Sutra Library currently houses tens of thousands of volumes from the Chinese Tripitaka, the Dragon Tripitaka, the Taisho Tripitaka, the Korean Tripitaka, and other classics. The current Sutra Library was redesigned and rebuilt on the original site between 1992 and 1993, based on pre-destruction materials.
