Donglin Temple, located in Donglinsi Village, Jiayu Town, over 20 kilometers southeast of Xingyang City, was founded in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, dating back over 1,800 years. It is a branch of the Shaolin Temple. Because the monks in the early days often performed Buddhist rituals in cave dwellings, it was named Donglin Temple. Along with Shaolin Temple and Zhulin Temple, it is known as one of the " Three Forests of Heaven ." Together with Xiangguo Temple in Kaifeng, White Horse Temple in Luoyang, and Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng, it is considered one of the Four Great Temples of the Central Plains.
Nestled between mountains and water, Donglin Temple boasts a rich history, numerous cultural relics, and beautiful scenery. Within the temple, towering ancient pagodas, numerous steles, and magnificent halls exude a majestic aura. Legend has it that Zhu Yuanzhang worked as a monk here at the age of seven . After becoming emperor, he commissioned the enshrinement of a white jade Buddha statue, named " Namo Riguang Bodhisattva , " which now resides in an ancient cave behind the temple.
The newly built Donglin Temple not only preserves these ancient relics but also features a magnificent gate. In its center, four Buddha deities bear a giant tripod on their shoulders. In the center, inscribed by Shaolin Temple abbot Shi Yongxin, are the words " Donglin Dajue Zen Temple . " Donglin Lake, 500 meters south of the temple , offers captivating scenery.
