Introducing Gaoguan Waterfall

The Gaoguan Waterfall Scenic Area is located in the lower reaches of the Gaoguan River, southeast of Huyi District, Xi'an, over 30 kilometers from Xi'an. It borders Chang'an District at the northern foot of the Qinling Mountains. The Shimao Peak within the mountain resembles a giant wearing a tall hat, giving the area its name, "Gaoguan," for its unique image. The waterscape is a striking contrast between mountain and water, with Gaoguan Waterfall being the most striking, spectacular, and dynamic. However, the booming tourism industry has attracted hundreds of people from the city every holiday and weekend. Farmhouses within the scenic area have erected their awnings directly on the gentle waters upstream and downstream of the waterfall, and food scraps and garbage are dumped into the water without restraint, severely damaging the waterfall's ecological environment.

Gaoguan Waterfall is located at the mouth of Gaoguan Valley, above Gaoguan Pond. "The mountain is steep, and the waterfall cascades down like the Milky Way, forming a pool several feet wide and unfathomable deep" (Revised Huxian Chronicles). Tang Dynasty poet Cen Shen offered a more vivid description of the waterfall: "The waterfall cascades down the cliff face, leaving a half-sky covered in white. Rain falls on the walls all year round, and thunder roars around the village all day long."

Climate and best time to travel

In a temperate monsoon climate, the rocks flanking Gaoguan Falls, seemingly carved by knives and axes, rise to a height of twenty meters. Watching from below, the water plummets, swirling and scattering, pearls and jade splash, and the air permeates with vapor. A chilling air covers the face, penetrating the skin. Listening to it, the roaring waves resonate like thunder, the mountains echoing, the momentum is magnificent, and it is a perfect summer escape.

Recommended number of days and locations for visiting

Gaoguan Waterfall is unique in that its head and tail are hidden and exposed, creating a subtle flow. From the upper edge, the water is trapped by rocks and flows into a stream, twisting and turning, before cascading down with a surging force. Furthermore, the Sieve Pond above the falls and the Gaoguan Dragon Pond below create the unique structure of Gaoguan Waterfall.

Climb the stone steps on the cliff face west of the waterfall, through Niubi Cave, past Mingdao Pavilion, and onto Yingzui Rock. Standing on the viewing platform perched atop Gaoguan Pond, you'll be greeted by a panoramic view of the waterfall. Mist rises like a fairyland, and as you follow the sun, a dazzling rainbow of colors shimmers across the water, another unique feature of Gaoguan Waterfall.

It is recommended to play for about 3 hours.
