Yuanlin, also known as Yuan Shikai's Tomb and Yuan Gonglin, was built in June 1916 and completed in June 1918. It covers an area of more than 90,000 square meters. It is a large tomb in a combination of Chinese and Western styles for Yuan Shikai, a famous military and political figure in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, the first president of the Republic of China, and his wife Yu.
Yuanlin is located in Taipingzhuang, on the north bank of the Huanshui River, Shengli Road, Beiguan District, Anyang City, Henan Province. It faces the Huanshui River to the south, overlooks the Hanling Mausoleum to the north, borders the Imperial Road to the east, and is adjacent to the Jingguang Temple to the west. The mausoleum follows the layout of Ming and Qing mausoleums, employing a blend of Chinese and Western architectural techniques. It incorporates traditional Chinese classical forms within its structure and incorporates Western architectural elements. This unique blend of ancient and modern elements creates a unique architectural style, marking a pioneering example in Chinese mausoleum architecture and holds a special place in the history of Chinese mausoleum architecture. The architectural layout remains largely intact.
Yuanlin was designated a Henan Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Site by the Henan Provincial People's Government on November 21, 1982, a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Site by the State Council on March 5, 2013, and a National AA-level Scenic Area by the Anyang Municipal Tourism Bureau in January 2015. On December 25, 2018, Yuanlin Scenic Area passed the National Tourism Administration's landscape quality review and was awarded the National 3A-level Scenic Area designation.
With a temperate monsoon climate, Yuanlin inherits traditional Chinese architectural styles while incorporating Western architectural influences, resulting in a unique blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles. It is a great place to visit in all seasons.
Yuanlin, with the sacred path as its central axis, stretches two kilometers from north to south. A massive screen wall stands at the southernmost point of Yuanlin. Its interior is adorned with brick carvings, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and a solemn and elegant atmosphere. It is the largest and most exquisitely decorated screen wall in China. Passing the screen wall and heading north along the sacred path, crossing the rough stone bridge and the blue-white stone bridge, another major structure of Yuanlin—the memorial archway—comes into view. On either side of the archway, white marble pillars and stone statues stand facing each other. The statues of civil and military figures lining the sacred path best embody the characteristics of the Yuanlin era. The stele pavilion is one of the most important structures in Yuanlin. It spans three bays and houses a massive stone sculpture, known as the Bixi (Bixi), reclining within. Passing the pavilion, one arrives at the main courtyard. The main courtyard was Yuanlin's most important venue for sacrificial ceremonies. The main gate, a three-bay, single-eaved, hip-and-gable roof covered in green glazed tiles, stretches across the grounds.
It is recommended to play for about 2 hours.
