The Anyang Bell and Drum Tower is located in the middle of the ancient city's North Street, at the intersection of East and West Bell Tower Lanes, adjacent to the Guo Pu Temple. The bell tower we see today is not the original structure; the original was destroyed during war. This bell tower was rebuilt on the original site in 1988 by the Anyang Municipal Government during the renovation of the old city and the development of North Street.
The Old Bell Tower, originally built during the Hongzhi reign of the Ming Dynasty, held a crucial position in the ancient city. It not only occupied a key transportation route but also the highest point in the city. According to historical records, the bell tower's platform was over seven meters high, with a double-eaved, hip-and-gable roof. Arched doorways on all four sides provided access to the east, south, west, and north, facilitating travel.
The construction of the bell tower was both a response to the prevailing trend and a personal expression of purpose. After Zhu Yuanzhang unified China, the nation gradually grew stronger through several generations of stable rule. From the highest to the lowest levels, the construction of tall pavilions and terraces became a popular expression of peace and prosperity. Pavilions and halls were constructed across the country, modeled after those in Kyoto, and the bell tower was one of these.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, the temperate monsoon climate offers a rare tranquility. Despite being surrounded by shops, the Anyang Bell and Drum Towers offer a unique sense of grandeur. Although rebuilt, they still capture the city's ancient elegance. It's a great place to visit in all seasons.
The large bell hanging in Anyang Bell and Drum Tower is from the Ming Dynasty. The high platform and heavy roof of the bell tower give you a sense of history and the unique sense of heaviness contained in it, which is spectacular.
It is recommended to play for about 30 minutes.
