Introducing Fuguo Temple

Fuguo Temple, also known by its Tibetan name Aomin Nanzhuolin, meaning "Forest of Liberation in the Heaven of Ultimate Color," is located in Baisha Township, Lijiang City, Yunnan Province. It was first built in 1601, the 29th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty. Originally, it served as the ancestral temple of the Mu clan chieftain. Residents were Han Mahayana Buddhist monks, and the temple was named "Liberation Forest." Later, Emperor Xizong of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Youjiao, bestowed the name "Fuguo Temple."

In 1679, the 18th year of the reign of Emperor Kangxi, it was converted to Tibetan Buddhism and became the mother temple of the five major monasteries in Lijiang. It is the largest Karma Kagyu monastery in Yunnan. Successive Karmapas, including the Great Situ Rinpoche and the Gyaltsap Rinpoche, have resided and preached here, contributing to the flourishing of Buddhism. The 10th Karmapa, Choying Dorje, presided over and taught at Fuguo Temple for 30 years, making it a key center of the Karma Kagyu tradition. The temple houses numerous sacred relics and artifacts related to the activities of the Karmapas.

The temple was destroyed by fire in the first month of the Jiazi year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1864) and rebuilt in the eighth year of the Guangxu reign (1882). The original temple had five courtyards for public housing and eighteen courtyards for monks. Among them, the "Five Phoenix Tower" (also known as the "Fayun Pavilion") is an extremely exquisite building, enjoying great reputation both domestically and internationally.
