Introducing Ziwei Cave

When seeing "Ziwei Cave", the first reaction is that it is a synonym for the place where immortals practice and live, and people often embed that fairyland dreamland in this name.

Ziwei Cave is located on Ziwei Mountain west of Chaohu Lake. Ziwei Mountain is named after the Ziwei star in the sky and has nothing to do with the crape myrtle flower. The couplet at the entrance to the scenic area reads, "Purple air fills the air, creating a scene of beauty for ten miles." The lower couplet reads, "A gentle breeze ripples through the vast expanse, bringing about a sense of elegance." The horizontal scroll reads, "Ziwei Cave Heaven."

There is Ziwei Cave in the middle of the mountain. This cave was formed when an underground river moved the earth's crust. Therefore, the layers of the cave formed by the impact of the underground river are very clear. There are stalactites inside, but not many.

The side cave is Wangqiao Cave. Legend has it that during the Spring and Autumn Period, Prince Wang Ziqiao, the crown prince of King Ling of Zhou (also known as Prince Ji, given name Jin, courtesy name Zijin), resided in the cave, refining elixirs and achieving immortality. This is how the cave got its name. Wangqiao Cave is the only Buddhist cliff-carved cave in Anhui Province. Within, there are 500 stone arhats carved into the rock face, but only one has a head. Apparently, the head was deliberately chiseled off, about two centimeters deep. Judging by the carving technique, it was done by a skilled craftsman, but the reason for this removal remains a mystery. The Chao County Chronicles, dating from the late Qing Dynasty, record: "Only one remains intact; the others are headless."

The temperate monsoon climate is characterized by the "Four Wonders" and "Three Wonders" of the cave, which are the "Sky Ditch", "Sky Slab", "Sky Channel", "Yuluo Tent", "Shigoose Tube" and "Tianwai Waterfall", making them a great place for a summer getaway.

All the statues within are headless, save for a slightly larger one. The reason for this "headless Buddha" remains unknown.
