The Big Waterwheel in Lijiang Ancient Town is the iconic building of Lijiang Ancient Town. It has become the landmark of Lijiang Ancient Town and a place where tourists visiting Lijiang must take photos.

In December 2011, the Lijiang Ancient Town Protection and Management Bureau dismantled the waterwheel and replaced it with a new one. During this period, many Lijiang merchants, Lijiang tourists and netizens exclaimed whether the waterwheel was going to be dismantled. The waterwheel had been in use for 14 years and was severely damaged by wind and sun. This time, it was just undergoing a thorough repair and replaced with a "new one".

The waterwheel, also known as the Kongming cart, is my country's oldest agricultural irrigation tool. It represents a remarkable labor skill developed by our ancestors during their conquest of the world and is a precious cultural heritage. Legend has it that Hua Lan created a prototype during the reign of Emperor Ling of the Han Dynasty. It was refined by Kongming during the Three Kingdoms period and later adopted by the Kingdom of Shu. It was widely used for agricultural irrigation during the Sui and Tang dynasties, boasting a history of over 1,700 years. However, the waterwheel in Lijiang Old Town serves merely as a landmark and ornamental feature.
