The Lijiang Guanyin Gorge Scenic Area is located at the Yulong Pass in Qihe Township, Lijiang City, in northwestern Yunnan Province. Located 16 kilometers from the Old Town of Lijiang, at an altitude of 2,230 meters, the scenic area covers 1,800 mu (approximately 1,800 mu). It served as the only gateway and military fortress along the Ancient Tea-Horse Road (Yunnan-Tibet Highway) leading from Lijiang to Tibet. On January 25, 1639, the renowned Chinese traveler Xu Xiake entered the area at the invitation of the Mu clan chieftain. He eulogized the area, saying, "Walking waters, surrounded by fields... It is the 'first key to Lijiang.'" Hence, it is known as the "first scenic spot in Lijiang."
Lijiang is located on the main roads leading to Yunnan-Tibet, Nujiang River and Bashu. From a geographical point of view, it is in an important position in the transition zone between Yunnan and Sichuan, making it the largest transit station and distribution center for trade between Yunnan and Tibet. Qihe Qiutangguan is located at the pass and fortress passage of "the key to Lijiang County", where caravans and merchants gather.
Walking along the Ancient Tea-Horse Street evokes memories of the former glory of the Great Horse Caravan. Today, the street still boasts numerous historic workshops and shops, including carpentry shops, leatherwork shops, copper and iron shops, silver shops, inns, taverns, and shops. These shops have now resumed normal operations, providing a platform for visitors to Guanyin Gorge to experience the indigenous culture of this region. These shops showcase a variety of crafts, including Dongba script, woodcuts, wood carvings, root carvings, embroidery, calligraphy, and paintings, preserving the ancient Naxi culture.

Guanyin Gorge is known for its natural beauty and spiritual significance. The name "Guanyin" refers to the Buddhist goddess of mercy, and the gorge is a popular pilgrimage site for those seeking peace and reflection amidst nature. It also offers a glimpse into the region's rich natural landscape and is a gateway for exploring Lijiang’s cultural and historical heritage.
Guanyin Gorge is located about 20 kilometers southeast of Lijiang, in the Yunnan province. You can reach the gorge by taxi or take a local bus from Lijiang city center. The journey takes about 30-40 minutes. For a more adventurous experience, walking or cycling is also an option, but it requires a longer time commitment.
The gorge is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The best time to visit is during the spring and autumn months when the weather is pleasant, and the landscapes are at their most vibrant. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal to avoid large crowds and to enjoy peaceful surroundings.
The entrance fee to Guanyin Gorge is typically around ¥80 (Chinese Yuan). Tickets can be purchased at the entrance or online through travel platforms. It's recommended to check in advance for any seasonal pricing or discounts.
Booking tickets in advance is not required, but during peak tourist seasons (e.g., holidays and weekends), it’s recommended to buy tickets online 1-2 days before your visit to ensure availability.
Exploring Guanyin Gorge typically takes around 2-3 hours, depending on how much time you spend hiking, photographing, and relaxing by the river. If you plan to explore the surrounding areas, you may need half a day.
Guided tours are available in Mandarin, and some may offer English-speaking guides upon request. Audio guides in multiple languages, including English, are also available for rental at the entrance.
Night visits are not available, as the gorge closes at 6:00 PM. However, special tours may be offered during major holidays or festivals. It’s best to check with local tour operators for any nighttime events.
