Introducing Yushuizhai

The Yushuizhai Scenic Area, located north of Baisha Town in Yunnan Province, comprises a series of scenic spots. A landmark site centered on Naxi ethnic culture, seamlessly integrated with the natural landscape, it has become a major tourist attraction in Lijiang. Yushuizhai is a sacred Dongba site of the central Naxi ethnic group and serves as the origin of Lijiang Old Town.


The Nature Conservancy has designated Yushuizhai as a Dongba Culture Heritage Base, Baishaxi Music Heritage Base, and Leba Dance Heritage Base, dedicated to the excavation, compilation, inheritance, research, and display of the ancient Naxi culture. The Yushuizhai Dongba Culture Heritage Base preserves the traditional simplicity of the Naxi people. Dongba Village is built entirely in accordance with the traditional Naxi lifestyle, and from the architecture to every detail of daily life, one can experience traditional Naxi culture.

Shenlong Sandieshui

A large spring flows down the hillside, folding into three layers. The Naxi people's worship of the Three-Layered Water has been integrated into their daily lives. They have shaped their drinking water into the shape of a three-layered spring; they use the Three-Layered Water at family banquets, dividing their tableware into three layers of high and low plates, bowls, and hot pots; they have built the Three-Layered Water into Naxi courtyards, and Naxi women even wear the Three-Layered Water on their bodies.


Yushuizhai Dongba Village

Built entirely in accordance with the traditional Naxi lifestyle, from the courtyard layout to the building facilities, to the tools used, to the details of life, you can feel the traditional ethnic cultural atmosphere. This is the inheritance base of Dongba culture, and there are three most prestigious Dongba masters who have profound knowledge of Dongba culture.


Dongba Sacrifice

Yushuizhai is an important part of Dongba culture, and its various elements are displayed in sacrificial activities. Dongba sacrificial activities include three major ceremonies: offering sacrifices to heaven, offering sacrifices to the government office, and offering sacrifices to the wind. Yushuizhai has the oldest and most exemplary sacrificial site in Lijiang. In October 1999, during the first China Lijiang International Dongba Culture and Art Festival, Yushuizhai was the designated venue for sacrificial ceremonies and displays of Dongba culture.
