This former residence of the renowned scholar Fang Guoyu is situated northeast of the World Cultural Heritage site of Lijiang Old Town. It is 500 meters north along the stone path west of Lijiang No. 1 Middle School, Fang's alma mater.
Mr. Fang Guoyu (1903-1983) was born into a scholarly family in Dayan Town, the former Naxi Autonomous County of Lijiang. He is a well-known contemporary Chinese historian and professor, and an outstanding representative of the Naxi ethnic group. He has made outstanding contributions to Chinese ethnic history, the history of China's southwestern frontier, and Dongba culture. He has written a large number of works, including "A Brief Introduction to the Catalog of Yunnan Historical Materials", "A Study of the Historical Geography of Southwest China", "A Draft History of the Yi Nationality", "A History of the Han and Jin Ethnic Groups", "A Collection of Essays on Western Yunnan", "The Anti-Japanese War in Western Yunnan", and "The Collected Works of Fang Guoyu".
