Introducing Kegong Square

The Kegongfang in Lijiang Old Town was first built during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty to commemorate the "three successful candidates in the imperial examinations" of the Yang family. In 1723, the first year of the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty, Lijiang implemented the "reform of the chieftain system" (reform of the native chieftain system) to transform the hereditary rule of the chieftains into a system of officials appointed by the central government for a fixed term. From then on, Lijiang entered a feudal society. This transformation of the social system greatly stimulated the enthusiasm of ordinary people for education.

In the 180 years between the "reform of the natives" and the abolition of the imperial examination system in the late Qing Dynasty, Lijiang produced over 60 Juren (School of Jurchen) and seven Jinshi (Jinshi) scholars. During the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty, brothers Yang Zhaolan and Yang Zhaorong, who lived in Kegongfang, both passed the imperial examination. Then, during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty, Yang Zhaorong's son Yang Shuochen also passed the imperial examination. As a result, government and public donations funded the construction of the two-story Kegongfang at the entrance of the alley.

It was destroyed by fire on the third day of the first lunar month in 1944. Three years later, on the 60th anniversary of the passing of the imperial examination by Geng Ji, the last Jinshi in Kegongfang, the villagers rebuilt Kegongfang on the original site that had been burned, and upgraded it to three floors, which has been passed down to this day.
