
Xi'an Jiaotong University, located in the ancient capital of Xi'an, is a comprehensive research-oriented national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and a vice-ministerial-level university directly under the central government. It was jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. It is listed as a Class A university for the construction of world-class universities, a key university in the national "Seventh Five-Year Plan" and "Eighth Five-Year Plan", and one of the first seven universities to be key constructed in the national "211 Project".
The university has four campuses: Xingqing, Yanta, Qujiang, and the Western China Science and Technology Innovation Port. Covering approximately 8,000 mu (approximately 16,000 acres), it houses 26 schools (departments, centers), nine undergraduate colleges, and 20 affiliated teaching hospitals. The university boasts 25 postdoctoral research centers, 32 first-level doctoral programs, five professional doctoral programs, 43 first-level master's programs, 27 professional master's programs, and 87 undergraduate programs. Eight first-level disciplines are designated as national key disciplines. Fourteen disciplines are ranked in the top 1% globally by ESI, two in the top 1‰, and engineering in the top 1‱. The university has a faculty of 6,137 and a full-time student population of 40,346, including 19,629 graduate students.
It has a warm temperate semi-humid continental monsoon climate with distinct seasons: cold, warm, dry, and wet. Winters are cold, windy, foggy, and with little rain or snow; springs are warm, dry, windy, and changeable; summers are hot and rainy, with a prominent summer drought and frequent thunderstorms and strong winds; and autumns are cool, with a rapid drop in temperature and significant autumn rain.
