Tianpeng Mountain Stronghold, located in Shanyang County, Shangluo City, Shaanxi Province, was built mostly during the Ming and Qing dynasties. These forts, built of massive rocks, are often situated on steep terrain. Below Liang lies the Maojia Gorge, a winding canyon lined with plank paths and steep peaks. The approximately 20-kilometer-long canyon boasts 72 caves. These caves and the stone strongholds atop them were built by locals to escape bandits. Tianpeng Mountain Stronghold is rectangular in shape, with rounded ends. The fortress stretches approximately 300 meters long, creating a natural, quaint, tranquil, and beautiful environment.
Climbing from the west gate of Tianpeng Mountain Stronghold to the summit of Yintai Mountain, one can overlook ninety-six cave strongholds across two provinces and four counties. This area lies on the border between Shaanxi and Hubei provinces, and at the intersection of Shanyang, Zhen'an, Zhashui, and Yunxi counties. In ancient times, a lookout post stood on this mountaintop, displaying four large flags: blue, black, red, and white. If a signal smoke signal was lit in a stronghold or cave, the mountaintop behind Tianpeng Mountain Stronghold would also light a signal smoke signal. A red flag signaled the other strongholds to take precautions, a green flag signaled support from neighboring strongholds, a black flag signaled danger or a stronghold had been breached, and a white flag signaled the departure of the bandits and the all-clear.
Although many of the mountain strongholds are located high atop the peaks, each boasts a year-round well, a fact often cited by locals as a source of pride: "As high as the mountain, so high is the water." Qingliang Village boasts two gates, Jingmen and Shengmen, each with a spring for drinking water. The wall, built entirely of stone slabs, is two meters and seven meters thick and five meters high, with eight artillery positions positioned in the eight directions: Qian, Kan, Gen, Zhen, Xun, Li, Kun, and Dui.
The warm temperate semi-humid monsoon climate features four distinct seasons, with rain and heat occurring in the same season, and distinct dry and wet seasons in the summer and winter. Avoid the cold winter and travel in spring, summer, and autumn.
Tianpeng Mountain Village is situated on a rugged terrain, nestled among rolling hills. Amidst the undulating peaks, the village and its walls, built of bluestone, snake along the mountainside, showcasing the magical beauty of nature and the uncanny craftsmanship of humankind. Beneath the peaks, dozens of waterfalls, pools, and streams, varying in altitude, create a cascading cascade. Plank roads weave through the canyon, while the Water Curtain Cave, Yixiantian (One Line Sky), and Jiutian Waterfall showcase breathtaking canyon scenery. This scenic area, encompassing the village, mountains, canyons, waterfalls, and caves, showcases its diverse and rich landscape.
