Catholicism officially arrived in Yunnan during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, primarily through two channels: first, the conversion of the Empress Dowager, Empress, and members of the imperial entourage of the Southern Ming Dynasty's "Yongli Imperial Family"; and second, the migration of some Sichuanese Catholics to northeastern Yunnan, including Yanjin County, northeast of present-day Zhaotong. Subsequently, priests from Sichuan traveled from Yibin to Yunnan for pastoral visits and missionary work, thus initiating the further development of Catholicism in Yunnan.
