The Beiyang Navy Loyal Soul Monument is located in the eastern part of Weihai City, on a hill north of the Beiyang Navy Admiralty Office on Liugong Island. It was built in 1988 by the Weihai Municipal People's Government to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Beiyang Navy during the Qing Dynasty (1888-1988), hence the name.
Reliefs are carved on both sides of the stele. The base is constructed of red granite from Shidao, and the stele is veneered with white marble from Laizhou. Designed by Qiu Zhihai and others, the inscription was written by Qi Qizhang. The inscription briefly describes the formation of the Beiyang Navy and the events leading up to the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895.
It has a temperate continental semi-humid monsoon climate with distinct four seasons, moderate cold and hot seasons, synchronized light and temperature, and simultaneous rain and heat. Spring is dry and windy, summer is hot and rainy, autumn is sunny and refreshing, and winter is cold and snowy.
