Located in central Hainan Island, the Wuzhishan National Nature Reserve is a forest ecosystem nature reserve. The scenic area is dotted with pristine tropical rainforest, layer upon layer, winding through the mountains. Numerous springs and lakes dot the mountain, creating a harmonious blend of mountain and water. Climbing high offers a unique perspective. See the two intertwined mother and child trees; wild tea trees boast miraculous medicinal properties; and from the viewing platform, gaze out over the majestic Wuzhi Mountain, the roof of Hainan, at 1,868 meters above sea level. Its five peaks stand side by side, like five fingers supporting the sky.
There are currently two main hiking routes in the scenic area: one leads through the valley to the source of the Changhua River, and the other leads to the main peak of Wuzhi Mountain. The two routes are not connected, so after completing one, you can only continue to the other route by returning to the foot of the mountain.

Wuzhishan National Nature Reserve is one of Hainan’s most significant protected areas, preserving the island’s unique mountain ecosystem. It is home to a rich diversity of plant and animal species, some of which are endangered, making it an important ecological site.
The reserve is located in Wuzhishan City, central Hainan. It can be accessed by private car, taxi, or a guided tour. Public transportation is limited, so renting a car or hiring a taxi is recommended.
The reserve is open year-round. The best times to visit are during the cooler months (October to April), avoiding the hot summer season. Mornings and late afternoons are ideal to avoid the heat and crowds.
The entrance fee is typically around CNY 60-100. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance or via local tour providers. Online booking may also be available for guided tours.
Booking in advance is not usually necessary for entry, but it is recommended if you plan on joining a guided tour or visiting during peak tourist seasons.
A full visit to the Wuzhishan National Nature Reserve can take between 3 to 6 hours, depending on the trails you choose and the activities you engage in.
Guided tours are available in Mandarin, with some offering basic English services. Audio guides may be provided, especially for the more popular trails.
Start at the main entrance and take a scenic hike up to the mountain summit. From there, explore the surrounding nature trails, and don’t miss the forest areas and waterfalls along the way. A full circuit can take around 3-4 hours.
Night visits and light shows are not available at this nature reserve. The best experience is during the day when you can fully appreciate the natural beauty of the reserve.
The reserve can get crowded during national holidays and weekends. The least crowded times are weekdays, especially early in the morning or late afternoon.
The reserve has basic facilities including toilets, rest areas, and a few small shops selling snacks and water. There are no major restaurants, so it’s recommended to bring your own food and water.
The reserve has some accessible paths, but many areas involve hiking and rough terrain, which might not be suitable for elderly or disabled visitors. Children may enjoy easier trails and the forested areas.
