Dongmaozhou, also known as East Island, is located 5.5 kilometers offshore east of Sanya City and covers an area of 0.56 square kilometers. It is named for the hawksbill turtles that inhabit the island and its resemblance to them. Home to boobies, terns, gray-billed gulls, and golden gulls, the island is a bird paradise and a national key nature reserve. Formed by a coral reef, East Island boasts lush greenery and a small freshwater lagoon on its southeast side.
Before the early 1950s, the beautiful Dongmaozhou Island lacked fresh water, lacking the basic conditions for island living. Fishermen passing through called it "Fire Island," "Wind Island," and "Desolate Island." However, since the Chinese People's Liberation Army established a garrison on the island in the early 1950s, this former "Fire Island," "Wind Island," and "Desolate Island" has now become a "steel outpost" and "sea garden" in the South China Sea.
