Black Dragon Pond Park is an ancient scenic spot located in the northern suburbs of Kunming. Comprising two major scenic areas: a complex of ancient buildings and the "Longquan Plum Blossom Exploration" attraction, Black Dragon Pond Park is centered around an ancient spring pond. The park boasts numerous historical sites and lush vegetation, particularly renowned for its plum blossoms. Black Dragon Pond boasts a rare, large plum garden, a popular spot for plum viewing in Kunming, known as "Longquan Plum Blossom Exploration." The "Tang Plum" trees in the park are said to have been transplanted from the Nanzhao Kingdom. Together with the "Yuan Plum" trees from Caoxi Temple in Anning, they are considered Yunnan's most precious ancient plum trees. Every winter, thousands of plum trees bloom here, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
The Black Dragon Pond, where the park is located, has been documented since the Han Dynasty. Ancient people believed it to be the palace of the Black Dragon, the Dragon King of Yunnan, and thus constructed numerous historical sites around the spring, including the Black Water Shrine. Numerous buildings still surround the spring. The park includes the Black Dragon Palace, also known as the Lower Temple, dating from the Ming Dynasty, which houses statues of the Dragon King and other aquatic creatures. Deep within the park, nestled against the mountainside, lies the Upper Temple, also known as the Dragon Spring Temple. This magnificent, five-story courtyard offers a breathtaking spectacle.
The Plum Garden, located north of the Shangguan "Longquan Temple," is the centerpiece of the park. Thousands of plum trees, including many ancient ones, are planted within. Every winter, the garden's vast expanse of plum blossoms blooms, making it a must-see if you're in Kunming at this time.
Kunming boasts a subtropical plateau monsoon climate; December to February is the best time to visit, ideal for viewing plum blossoms. Kunming's four seasons are like spring, with warm winters and cool summers, and pleasant spring and autumn weather. Plum blossoms are also available in early winter.
