Kunming's Jincheng Ancient Town is located in Jincheng Town, Jinning District, on the southeastern shore of Dianchi Lake. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and a hilly plain facing Dianchi Lake on one side, the area surrounding present-day Jincheng Town in Jinning District was once the capital of the ancient Dian Kingdom and the center and birthplace of ancient Dian culture. Jincheng Ancient Town boasts well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty dwellings and other structures. In contrast to these private wells, a number of wells, known as "official wells," dot the streets just outside the houses, giving the street its name. These ancient wells all possess unique characteristics that distinguish them from those found elsewhere. First, their mouths are small, only about 20 centimeters; second, they feature symmetrical holes on either side of the well curb. Local elders explain that the small mouths are designed to prevent suicide by jumping into the well, while the small holes on the sides of the curb are designed to be covered and locked to prevent thieves and poisoning.
