Introducing Jinniu Street Mosque

The Jinniu Street Mosque in Kunming, also known as the East Gate Mosque, is located at No. 41 Jinniu Street in Kunming. Originally built during the Yuan Dynasty, it was constructed by Hui Muslims who arrived from the northwest along the Panlong River and accompanied Sayyid Ajjal's soldiers on his quest to pacify the Panlong River. During the Bingchen Rebellion of the Xianfeng Emperor (1852-1912), the Jinniu Street Mosque suffered significant damage. Later, with donations from Hui Muslims, the mosque was expanded and renovated in 1889 (the 15th year of the Guangxu Emperor's reign). The main hall was remodeled into five rooms, and additional halls, side rooms, and a minaret were added.

After being bombed by Japanese planes in 1941, it was rebuilt in 1943. The current Jinniu Street Mosque has undergone many repairs, especially in recent years. It has been restored to its original state and has become the only well-preserved Chinese-style mosque in Kunming.

The mosque's main hall, constructed of wood and earth, is 19 meters wide and 13 meters deep, accommodating over 200 people. It is a key Islamic place of worship in Kunming and was designated a protected cultural relic in Panlong District in 1990. The Jinniu Street Mosque, having undergone numerous renovations, has become one of Kunming's most popular religious venues for Muslims.
