Introducing Zhongaifang

The Zhongai Archway was built during the Yuan Dynasty to commemorate the merits of Saidian Ajjal Khan, the Minister of State for Prince Xianyang. It was named Zhongai Archway because Saidian Ajjal Khan, during his time in Yunnan, was attentive to the people and benefited them. He was described as "loyal to the emperor and loving to the people," hence the name. In ancient times, three memorial archways stood outside Kunming's South City: the Golden Horse Archway, the Jade Rooster Archway, and the Zhongai Archway. Because the three archways formed a "品" (Chinese character) shape, they were known as the "品" (Chinese character) Three Archways. Of the three, the Zhongai Archway was the oldest.

The Zhongai Archway was destroyed by fire twice. The first occurred on May 25, 1857, during the reign of Emperor Xianfeng of the Qing Dynasty. Fearing that Ma Xian intended to "mount a large cannon on the stone lions of the Zhongai Archway to attack the government office," the Governor-General of Yunnan and Guizhou, Hengchun, ordered rockets fired upon the archway, destroying it entirely and leaving no room for Ma Xian to mount the cannon. Flames erupted into the sky, reducing the centuries-old structure to ashes within hours. It wasn't until 1882, during the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, that the Governor-General of Yunnan and Guizhou, Cen Yuying, raised funds for its reconstruction.

Forty years later, in the night of 1924, a fire broke out in the nearby wax museum. The fire spread to the archway and burned it down to ashes within two or three hours. Due to various factors, including the Civil War and the Anti-Japanese War, the restoration was delayed until the 1999 World Horticultural Exposition in Kunming. In 1998, the government rebuilt the Zhongai Arch in the former Sanshi Street intersection near the nearby park to preserve the city's history and culture.
