The Ma Family Courtyard, built in 1923, was originally the residence of Ma Xuan, a renowned general of the Yunnan Army and the first mayor of Kunming. Facing south and north, the courtyard features a brick and wood structure with a quadrangle, five courtyards, and corner towers. It is the best-preserved example of Bai ethnic minority architecture still preserved in Kunming. In October 2001, it received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Conservation Award.

Entering the main gate, one is greeted by a spacious entrance hall and two side rooms on either side. Like the front wing, the back room also boasts a second floor. Judging solely by the layout and structure of the main gate and back room, this compound exhibits characteristics of Kunming's "one-seal" residential buildings, with the main gate situated on the central axis of the back room, opposite the main room. The courtyard and upstairs and downstairs corridors are spacious. The central rooms, both upstairs and downstairs, feature intricately carved lattice doors, and the wooden structures, such as the architrave, also boast exquisite carvings.

The courtyard's cross-arches, arches, and columns are integrated and mutually supportive. The earthen foundation is inlaid with walls, and the tiled roof, inlaid with mud mortar, prevents both falling and wind and sand intrusion. Various ethnic sculptures on the column capitals and beams, such as those depicting longevity, health, happiness, five blessings, peony facing the sun, and two dragons playing with a pearl, radiate the essence of folk culture. The load-bearing columns are connected to form a mutually supportive framework.
