Approved by the State Council in March 1992, the zone combines the preferential policies of a special economic zone, a bonded zone, and a development zone, serving as a "comprehensive testing ground" for China's reform and opening up. The zone is closely connected to Danzhou Bay, adjacent to the ASEAN Free Trade Area, and approximately 200 nautical miles from over 20 surrounding ports. A few kilometers from the center of Yangpu, the Yangpu Millennium Salt Fields are the area's most famous attraction. Dating back over 1,200 years, they cover a total area of ​​750 mu (approximately 1,000 acres) and boast over 7,300 inkstone-shaped salt troughs of varying shapes, with an annual output of 500 tons. They continue to produce salt and are among the last remaining ancient salt fields in China to retain the original solar-dried salt production method.
