Xiata, called "Shatu Aman" in Mongolian, means stairs. It crosses the Hatamuzida Pass at an altitude of 3,600 meters on the main ridge of the Tianshan Mountains, connecting the north and south of the Tianshan Mountains and serving as a shortcut from Yili to southern Xinjiang.
Located 70 kilometers southwest of Zhaosu County, the Xiata Gorge traverses a crucial ancient route from Yili to Aksu. Due to its complex terrain, high mountains, rapids, and glaciers, traversing the canyon is extremely dangerous and challenging. The Xiata Ancient Trail carries a rich history and has witnessed countless dazzling glories. Today, the Xiata Trail is a high-risk hiking route that combines archaeology and exploration. Crossing the fragmented Muzart Glacier, crevasses, glacial rivers, and the turbulent Namzart River, the trail presents a unique challenge for explorers.
It spans the northern and southern climate zones of the Tianshan Mountains. The northern climate is humid with heavy rain in summer, while the southern climate is dry with higher temperatures in summer.
The best time to travel is from May to early June or from late September to early October.
