Liaobin Ancient City and Liaobin Tower are located in Liaobin Village, 29 kilometers northeast of Xinmin City, Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. It is the remains of a thousand-year-old ancient city.
This ancient city is located at the confluence of the Liao River and the Xiushui River. It was a famous ferry and transportation hub in ancient times, and also a battleground for military strategists.
As early as the Eastern Jin Dynasty, this place had become a strategic military town. The Liao Dynasty was the most prosperous golden age in its history. The Liao rulers promoted the prosperity of this area, established the Liaozhou government here, and attracted a large number of immigrants from Jizhou. Later, long-term wars severely damaged this prosperous ancient city.
The Liaobin Ancient City is square in shape, covering an area of about 110,000 square meters. The city walls are made of rammed earth and have two gates in the north and south.
Liaobin Tower was built on a flat hill southwest of the ancient city site. It is made of bricks, octagonal with 13 floors, and solid with dense eaves. The tower is about 44 meters high. There is a niche on each side of the tower body, with a seated Buddha carved on it. Above the Buddha statue are two flying celestials dancing, and there is a attendant on each side of the Buddha statue.
During the repair of Liaobin Ancient City and Liaobin Pagoda, a number of precious relics including Buddha's teeth and relics were excavated from the underground palace of the ancient pagoda. Among them, the ring-footed, bucket-shaped, rust-patterned green-glazed bowl was made in the Tang Dynasty or the Five Dynasties period and is a very rare treasure.
