Introducing the Pure Light Stupa

The stupa is located at No. 15, Lane 45, Tawan Street, Huanggu District, northwest of Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. It is majestic and has a long history. Its scenery has remained unchanged from ancient times to the present.

The stupa was built in the 13th year of the Chongxi reign of the Liao Dynasty (1044) and rebuilt in the 5th year of the Chongde reign of the Qing Dynasty (1640). Because it contains 1,548 relics, it is also known as the Pure Light Stupa.

It was announced as a cultural relic protection unit of Shenyang in 1985 and as the seventh batch of national key cultural relic protection units in 2013.

The stupa is a thirteen-story octagonal brick tower with dense eaves, 33 meters high.

The whole structure consists of five parts: underground palace, pagoda base, pagoda body, pagoda eaves and pagoda top. The underground palace is located under the pagoda base and is where the Buddha's relics and other relics are stored.

The pagoda's base is an octagonal Sumeru pedestal, 17 meters high and 5.5 meters wide on each side. The pagoda consists of two parts: the lower part has a Sumeru pedestal in the shape of an upturned lotus, with a pot-shaped door in the middle containing a stone crouching animal. The upper part consists of octagonal circular columns, with a vaulted niche in the center of each side, housing a seated Buddha statue flanked by attendants.
