The Grassland Sky Road is located at the junction of Zhangbei County and Chongli District of Zhangjiakou City. It starts from Daqing Mountain (National Forest Park) on the south side of Shangyi County in the west and ends at Huapilingling in Chongli County in the east. It is an important channel connecting Chongli Ski Area, Chicheng Hot Spring Area, Zhangbei Grassland Scenic Area, Bailong Cave Scenic Area, and Daqing Mountain Scenic Area. It is also one of the ten most beautiful roads in mainland China.
Around the Grassland Sky Road, there are also tourist attractions such as Huapilingling, Yehulingling, the Ancient Great Wall, and the Glass Suspension Bridge (the top of the Sky Road). [1] The Grassland Sky Road is over 300 kilometers long (132.7 kilometers have been developed so far. At the end of 2011, Zhangbei County of Zhangjiakou City invested 320 million yuan and it was completed and opened to traffic at the end of September 2012. The western extension line - Shangyi section is currently under development and is expected to be opened to traffic at the end of 2018). The road is winding, with rivers and mountains, deep gullies, meadows with cattle and sheep, and magnificent scenery, presenting a picture scroll of Bailibatou scenery. It is dotted with many cultural, ecological and geological tourism resources such as the ruins of the Ancient Great Wall, Huapilingling, Yehulingling, and Zhangbei Grassland.
The Zhangbei County Government Information Disclosure Platform released an approval regarding the price of entrance fees for the "Grassland Sky Road". Starting from April 30, 2016, the 132-kilometer completed section of the "Grassland Sky Road" entered the toll era.
In response to public concerns and to facilitate tourists to visit the "Grassland Sky Road" scenic area, the Zhangbei County Government decided to cancel the admission fee to the "Grassland Sky Road" scenic area from May 23, 2016.

Grassland Sky Road is located in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province. The easiest way to get there is by taxi or private car. Public transport options are limited, but it is accessible by car from Zhangjiakou city center.
Grassland Sky Road is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during spring, summer, and early autumn (April to October) when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities. The views are particularly stunning during sunrise and sunset.
There is no entrance fee for driving or walking along Grassland Sky Road. However, you may incur fees for certain activities like guided tours or accessing specific viewpoints along the route. Tickets, if required, can usually be bought on-site.
No advance booking is required for access to the road itself, but if you plan to join guided tours or book accommodations nearby, booking in advance, especially during peak seasons, is advisable.
A visit to Grassland Sky Road can take 2 to 3 hours if you're simply driving along and stopping to take photos. If you plan to hike or explore nearby attractions, you may need more time—up to half a day.
Guided tours are available in Chinese, but English-speaking guides may be harder to find. It’s advisable to book a tour in advance if you prefer a guide, especially during peak seasons.
The best viewpoints are located along the route, particularly at elevated spots where you can see the vast grasslands and mountains. Sunrise and sunset provide the most dramatic lighting for photographs.
Start your journey at the main entrance to Grassland Sky Road, driving or walking through the route while stopping at designated viewpoints. If you have more time, consider stopping for a hike in the surrounding hills.
Night visits are available, and the clear skies make it ideal for stargazing. However, there are no light shows or special night tours offered at this location.
The area can be crowded on weekends and during public holidays. The least crowded times are weekdays, particularly in the early mornings and late afternoons, outside of peak tourist seasons (autumn and winter).
There are basic facilities such as toilets, small rest areas, and food stalls along the route. However, there are no large shopping centers, so it’s recommended to bring your own water and snacks.
The road is mostly accessible by car, so elderly and children can easily visit. Some hiking trails along the route may be difficult for those with mobility issues, so it's recommended to check ahead if you plan on hiking.
Cash is accepted, but mobile payments like WeChat Pay and Alipay are widely accepted in the region. It’s advisable to carry some cash in case smaller vendors do not accept digital payments.

Souvenir shops are available along the route, selling local crafts, tea, and simple handmade goods. You can find traditional Chinese items like silk products and small trinkets.
After visiting Grassland Sky Road, you can continue your journey by car, taxi, or bus to nearby attractions. If you're heading back to Zhangjiakou city, taxis or local buses are the best options.
