Qiliang Cave is a typical carbonate rock cave, renowned for its unique beauty, vastness, and seclusion. Within the cave, there are five major scenic areas: the Ancient Battlefield, the Gallery, Paradise, the Dragon Palace, and the Yin-Yang River. The cave, a collection of bizarre rocks and flowing springs and waterfalls, features a myriad of stalagmites, pillars, and stalactites, creating a breathtaking tapestry. The ancient battlefield is located at the front of Qiliang Cave. Many place names within the ancient battlefield still bear associations with the battle: the "Luoma River," where huge rocks were thrown into the river by the rebels, and the "Ancient Mill," where rice was ground to feed nearly 10,000 rebels. These wonders must be experienced in person.

Qiliang Cave is famous for its impressive limestone formations and rich cultural history. It is a natural wonder that has attracted visitors for centuries, and it also holds significance in local Tujia and Miao cultures.
Qiliang Cave is located in the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Hunan Province. It is best reached by taxi or private car from the city of Jishou, the nearest urban area. Public transportation is limited, so renting a car or taking a taxi is most convenient.
The cave is open year-round, but the best times to visit are in the spring and autumn when the weather is mild. The cave is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
The entrance fee is around 50-80 RMB. Tickets can be purchased at the site, but it is also possible to buy them online through various travel booking platforms.
Booking tickets in advance is recommended, especially during peak travel seasons like summer and holidays. A few days in advance is usually sufficient.
You’ll need around 2-3 hours to fully explore the cave and the surrounding area. This includes a guided tour through the cave and time spent admiring the views outside.
The most striking formations inside the cave include the “Golden Waterfall,” “Crystal Forest,” and other large stalactites and stalagmites. Don't miss the beautiful natural scenery outside the cave as well.
Guided tours are available, usually in Mandarin. English-speaking guides may be available upon request, but it is advisable to check in advance if you require an English-speaking guide.
The cave’s entrance offers a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains. Inside, the formations, especially the “Crystal Forest,” provide excellent photo opportunities. The view from the viewing platforms outside the cave also offers great landscapes.
Start by entering the cave through the main entrance, where you can see the initial formations. Follow the path through the various chambers to see the most iconic stalactites and stalagmites. End the tour with a short walk around the outdoor viewing area.
Night visits are not typically available, but during peak seasons, special lighting effects are sometimes used to enhance the cave's natural features for evening events. Check locally for any specific night tours.
The cave can be crowded during weekends and holidays. For a quieter experience, visit on weekdays, especially early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Basic facilities such as toilets and rest areas are available at the entrance. There are also small shops selling souvenirs and local snacks near the entrance to the cave.
Some parts of the cave may be challenging for elderly or disabled visitors due to the natural terrain. However, there are paved paths and areas around the cave that are accessible for strollers and people with mobility challenges.
Mobile payments like Alipay and WeChat Pay are accepted, and credit cards are also widely used. It's still advisable to carry cash for small purchases.
There are no large restaurants inside the cave, but nearby towns such as Jishou offer local dining options serving Hunan cuisine, including spicy dishes and local snacks.
Vegetarian and vegan options are available at local restaurants, but halal food options may be limited in this area.
There are various guesthouses and hotels in Jishou city, about 30 minutes by car from the cave. Popular options include budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels in the city center.
Other nearby attractions include the Fenghuang Ancient Town, known for its historic architecture and riverside views, as well as the Tujia and Miao ethnic villages.
Souvenir shops at the entrance of the cave sell local handicrafts, ethnic clothing, and traditional items like hand-woven baskets and jewelry. Local specialties such as tea and preserved fruits are also popular souvenirs.
After visiting Qiliang Cave, taxis or private cars are the best way to continue your trip to nearby attractions like Fenghuang Ancient Town or the ethnic villages. Public buses are available but may be less frequent.
