The county stretches 58 kilometers from east to west and 55 kilometers from north to south, with a total area of ​​2,318 square kilometers, of which 87.78% is mountainous. With a total population of 174,600 (2006), Jianchuan County comprises Bai, Han, Yi, Lisu, Hui, and Naxi ethnic groups. It is the predominant Bai ethnic group in the prefecture. Jianchuan County governs five towns and three townships, with five neighborhood committees and 88 administrative villages. The county government is located in Jinhua Town. The terrain is high in the northwest and low in the southeast. Major mountain ranges include Laojun Mountain, Shibao Mountain, Jinhua Mountain, Yanlu Mountain, and Xueban Mountain. Mineral deposits include copper, iron, lead, zinc, coal, and rock salt. National Highway 214, Dian (South)-Liu (Ku) Highway, and Ping (Po)-Dian (South) Highway traverse the county. The scenic spots and historical sites include the Tang Dynasty stone carvings of Shizhong Temple and the stone cliffs, which are national key cultural relics protection units, the Jinhua Shantian Shamen Tianwang statue and Baohe Temple, which are provincial cultural relics protection units, and the Shibaoshan National Scenic Area.
