Located on Yide Road in the heart of Guangzhou, the Stone Chamber Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is the grandest and most distinctive cathedral in the Catholic Diocese of Guangzhou and one of the most magnificent twin-spired Gothic structures still standing in China. Designed by a French architect and built by Chinese craftsmen, the cathedral is a landmark in Guangzhou.
The church was built in 1863 and completed in 1888. It is a Gothic-style building, comparable to the world-famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. The front of the church features a pair of towering stone towers that soar into the sky. To the west of the towers stands a large clock, and to the east is a large bell tower containing four large bronze bells imported from France.
The interior of the church has an arched vault with pointed ribs and high forked arches; the stained glass windows above the front door and on the surrounding walls are of the Gassho style, and all the doors and windows are inlaid with French-made colorful glass in darker red, yellow, blue, green and other colors.
