Jiuzihai (also known as Lijiang Ancient Town Jiuzihai and Ancient Town Jiuzihai) is located in Jiuzihai Village, Lijiang Old Town District, about 26 kilometers away from Lijiang Old Town. It is named after the nine naturally formed pools of various sizes in the dam. According to legend, it is a relic left by the Mu chieftain in the Ming Dynasty who went to Jiuzihai to get soil for making tiles.
Heading north from Lijiang Old Town, past the Dongba Valley, deep into Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and then turning east for a winding seven or eight kilometers, the vibrant, verdant Jiuzi Lake emerges before you, nestled in a basin nestled among the towering mountains. Nine small lakes dot the meadows, with the ever-present Jade Dragon Snow Mountain stretching out like a screen, offering a sweeping view. From May to November each year, wildflowers blanket the mountains, creating a veritable sea of flowers. These flowers are diverse, some blooming white one month, turning yellow the next, while others display a variety of colors. Generations of villagers have long been fascinated by the myriad phenomena occurring in this basin, but no one has ever explained these mysterious natural phenomena.
Jiuzihai Wetland is a key resource for primrose germplasm in Yunnan Province. Resembling a vase, it stands adjacent to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, creating a natural landscape amidst the jungles east of the mountain. Over 30 "sinkholes," like fallen pearls from the starry sky, are inlaid in the wetland with extraordinary craftsmanship. Legend has it that these sinkholes were the remains of the Ming Dynasty chieftains, the Mu clan, who collected soil for tile making.
Jiuzihai has a subtropical monsoon climate. From May to November every year, dozens of primroses bloom in succession, forming a beautiful sea of flowers. The reflections of the lake are breathtakingly beautiful, making it the best time to travel.
