Introducing Tongyuan Gate

Tongyuanmen City Wall Ruins Park, located in Qixinggang, Yuzhong District, Chongqing, comprises a plaza, city walls, and sculptures. The sculptures recount the historical stories of the old city wall's construction, defense, and siege. Two folk sculptures, "Roasted Rice Candy in Boiling Water" and "Sledding Rod," add a rich, urban feel.

It is the only ancient city wall of Chongqing’s 17 ancient city gates that is still preserved and in use, and it is also an important place to understand Chongqing’s history.

The city gate once had a gatehouse, but it was demolished during highway construction in the late 1920s. The main gate retains some of its original appearance, with a double-arched doorway separated by a light-filled patio. About a hundred meters of the city wall still remains on both sides of the doorway.

The two tunnels under the city wall look like doors, but they are not. Instead, they are car passages built in the 1940s, named "Peace Tunnel".
