Panjin City, located in southwestern Liaoning Province, is an ecological new city prospered by its oil industry and renowned for its rice. Panjin rice is nationally renowned, used for state banquets and the Olympics. Rich in resources and beautifully landscaped, Panjin is a paradise for migratory birds, known as the "Hometown of Red-crowned Cranes" and the "Capital of Black-headed Gulls." The Panjin Wetland has been recognized by tourism organizations as "China's Most Beautiful Wetland."
But the most attractive attractions are Asia's largest reed marsh and the world-famous Red Beach. For foodies, Panjin also has something to offer. It's northern China's largest river crab production area, renowned for its fragrant rice fields and plump crabs. The River Crab Branch of the China Fisheries Association has awarded it the title of "China's No. 1 River Crab City."
In spring, come birdwatch in the most beautiful wetlands; in summer, visit the reed seas of Crane Country and marvel at this wonder of the world; in autumn, savor the plump crabs and fragrant rice while admiring the wetland scenery; in winter, go ice fishing and enjoy a hot spring retreat. The scenery is endless year-round.
Panjin's most distinctive scenery and cuisine are the Red Beach, birdwatching, and river crabs. If you want to experience all three, the best month is October.
See the Red Beach: September to mid-October is the best season to see the Red Beach. After mid-October, the grass begins to turn purple.
Birdwatching: Locals say the best seasons for birdwatching are when birds arrive and depart. Each year, birds migrate from the south to the north in March and April, and return south from October to mid-November. Panjin's scenery is particularly beautiful in March and October, when you can see flocks of birds.
Crab: After the Mid-Autumn Festival, the famous local Chinese mitten crabs begin to plump up, and the best crab season lasts until December. The farmers' markets in coastal villages sell freshly caught crabs. Prices vary depending on size, gender, and size. Large female crabs with roe are generally around 40 yuan per jin.
