Introducing Hanshan Temple
Hanshan Temple, located in Suzhou's Gusu District, was originally named "Miaoli Puming Pagoda." It belongs to the Linji school of Zen Buddhism. During the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty, two eminent monks, Hanshan and Xiqian, founded the temple. Historically, Hanshan Temple was one of China's ten most famous temples. The temple boasts numerous historical sites, including a stone stele inscribed with a poem by Zhang Ji, stone statues of Hanshan and Shitou, and fragments of inscriptions by Wen Zhengming and Tang Yin.
Hanshan Temple is now a 4A-level scenic spot. It has become a world-renowned Buddhist holy place, a bridge for folk cultural exchange with foreign countries, and a business card of the historical and cultural city of Suzhou.
The temple has a unique New Year's Bell Ringing ceremony: Hanshan Temple is renowned for its bells. Every year on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day, Hanshan Temple holds a bell-ringing ceremony, ringing the bell 108 times. Each bell represents a worry, and after hearing the bell, all worries will be blown away in the coming year.
