
The Jiuhuang Mountain Yuanwang Cave Scenic Area is located in Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County, Mianyang, Sichuan, China. It is the largest alpine cave in southwest China and a famous tourist cave in western China.
The Yuanwang Cave Scenic Area comprises a cluster of alpine caves, a golden plank road on a cliff, tea pavilions nestled on a precipitous mountain, primeval forests, and sites of ancient Qiang culture. The renowned Yuanwang Cave is a rare alpine cave complex in southwest China. Within the four square kilometers surrounding the cave, 23 unique caves, including Yanyun Cave, Ganlong Cave, and Silver Carp Cave, are scattered throughout the scenic area. Within the cave, hundreds of unique and captivating landscapes, such as "String of Beads and Jade," "Pearl White Jade Pagoda," "Stone Forest Beauty," "Jade Pool Cave Heaven," and "Stone Harp on a Cliff," create a scene both real and illusory, earning visitors the nickname "Dream Palace Cave"—the "Yellow Dragon Scenery within the Cave."

The Jiuhuang Mountain Ape King Cave is famous for its impressive limestone formations and its historical significance in local folklore. The cave is named after the legend of an “Ape King,” a mythical figure believed to have once lived there. The cave is located in Jiuhuang Mountain, Mianyang, Sichuan Province. It can be reached by taxi or private car from Mianyang city, approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour away. Public transportation options may be limited, so a taxi or private transport is recommended.
The cave is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. The best time to visit is in the spring or autumn when the weather is mild, and the surrounding area is lush and green. Avoid weekends and public holidays to avoid crowds.
The entrance fee is typically around 60-80 CNY. Tickets can be bought at the entrance or in advance via local ticketing platforms, depending on availability.
Booking tickets in advance is recommended during peak seasons, such as public holidays or weekends. Booking a few days ahead is usually sufficient, but for major holidays, a week in advance is advised.

The best photography spots are inside the Ape King Cave, where the natural rock formations create stunning visual effects. The surrounding mountain trails also provide excellent views of the valley below, especially in the morning light.
Start by visiting the Ape King Cave to admire the stalactites and stalagmites. Then, explore the surrounding trails for scenic views. If time allows, visit nearby temples for a deeper cultural experience.
Night visits or light shows are not available at the Ape King Cave. It is primarily a daytime destination, best visited during daylight hours for optimal viewing and safety.
The cave can get crowded during weekends and public holidays. To avoid crowds, visit during weekdays, particularly in the early morning when the park opens.
The cave site has basic facilities such as restrooms, drinking water stations, and small food stalls. However, for a full meal, it’s better to head to Mianyang city where there are more dining options. There are also souvenir shops selling local handicrafts near the entrance.
While the main pathways to the Ape King Cave are relatively accessible, the terrain inside the cave may be challenging for elderly or disabled visitors due to uneven floors and steps. For children and elderly, the surrounding natural areas are more suitable, but they should be cautious on the trails.
