Introducing Xianyu Cave

Xianyu Cave is known as the "Pearl of the Bamboo Sea" for its excellent natural and cultural landscapes. It is located in the steep cliff of Caieryan in the Xianyu Cave Scenic Area in the southern part of Shunan Bamboo Sea in Yibin City, Sichuan Province. It is a must-see place when visiting Shunan Bamboo Sea.

Xianyu Cave isn't actually a cave, but rather a half-cave, approximately 500 meters long, nestled against a cliff face and overlooking a deep valley. Once a bustling place with pavilions and verdant streams, it was once a bustling place of worship. Today, the pavilions are gone, leaving only a few Ming Dynasty cliff carvings. Xianyu Cave is a deep and treacherous site nestled within a natural rock cavity nestled within a sheer cliff face. Only a winding, steep staircase leads to the cave. Above the cave lies a dense bamboo forest, while below lies a vast canyon, across which the cave faces the Guabangyan Caves. Legend has it that when Taoist Shao, who achieved immortality in Xianyu Cave, was recruiting disciples, he inscribed his list of accepted students on the rock face, hence the name Guabangyan.

Lingxiao Palace

Entering the cave from the South Mountain Gate, the first thing you see is the Taoist temple, Lingxiao Hall. From left to right, Lingxiao Hall is divided into Lingguan Hall, Laojun Hall, and Jade Emperor Hall, bearing witness to the historical precedence of Buddhism over Taoism in Xianyu Cave, and the integration of Buddhism and Taoism. In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, Du Chaifei inscribed the plaque "Lingxiao Hall" on a cliff face, unifying the three halls. The Lingguan statue on this wall, about one meter tall, stands on a wind-fire wheel, holding a divine whip, eyes wide open, mouth wide open, and a majestic presence, depicted with a bold and powerful carving.

Monk Hall

To the right of Lingxiao Hall is the Monk Hall, where Buddhist ashes are stored after cremation. The seven-tiered stone pagoda with a pointed roof is where the first abbot's ashes were cremated. Because monks are commonly known as "monks," the hall is named after it.

Second Buddha Hall

Further ahead is the Hall of the Two Buddhas, housing the Three Buddhas of the Past, Present, and Present, the Eight Dharma Protectors, and the Twelve Perfect Enlightenments. A high relief carving depicts the Prince's visit to the Four Gates, representing the story of the Sakyamuni and Maitreya sutras. It's called the "Hall of the Two Buddhas" because it's smaller than the adjacent Great Buddha Hall and because the Sakyamuni sutras are known as the "Two Buddhas' Great Event."
