Andingmen, also known as the West Gate, is the main western gate of the Xi'an City Wall. It served as the central gate on the west side of the Tang Dynasty's imperial city and was preserved during the reduction and construction of the new city during the late Tang Dynasty. During the expansion of the city wall between the seventh and eleventh years of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1374-1378), its location was shifted slightly southward and renamed Andingmen. "Anding" symbolizes peace and stability in the western frontier. Inside the gate is West Street, and outside is Xiguan Main Street.
The West Gate has three gatehouses: the city tower, the watchtower, and the gatehouse, located on three lines of the city wall, from the inner to the outer walls. Each gatehouse has a curved archway. Between the city tower and the watchtower is a square urn, serving as a passageway in peacetime and a strategic defensive position in wartime. The watchtower is the best-preserved ancient fortress in my country to date. To the north of the city tower stands an observation tower built by the Japanese Emperor during his visit to Xi'an. From here, you can ascend the Ming City Wall of Xi'an.
