The Gugeng Ruins, located 1.5 kilometers east of Shangpai Town in Feixi County, are terraced and cover a total area of approximately 20,000 square meters. Excavations conducted by the Anhui Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology in 1983 and 1987 revealed a total area of 450 square meters.
Based on the relationship between stratigraphic layers, the period can be divided into three phases: early, middle, and late. Early pottery was primarily sand-tempered red pottery, with a small amount of red pottery coated with red. Household utensils included tripods, dou pots, pots, jars, zun pots, zhen pots, and cups. The middle period was still dominated by red pottery, with tripods and ring-footed vessels being the majority, and flat-bottomed vessels being less common. Key vessel shapes included tripods, dou pots, pots, bowls, alms bowls, plates, bird-headed jars, and cups. The late period was still dominated by red pottery, with a significant increase in black pottery. Key vessel shapes included tripods, dou pots, pots, zheng pots, alms bowls, basins, and bowls. Production tools included stone shovels, stone arrowheads, stone knives, and pottery spinning wheels.
The site also revealed a rectangular house built on flat ground. The ground, burnt by fire, was smooth and hard. Cylindrical holes were arranged in an orderly pattern around the house. A rectangular pottery stove sat in the center, flanked by pottery tripods, a bean pot, a basin, and a grate. This marks the first relatively complete Neolithic site discovered in Anhui Province.
