Looking for Private Drivers for Dunhuang/Jiayuguan

Hi there,

Does anyone have any recommendations for private drivers in Dunhuang and Jiayuguan? I've had a look online, but I'm struggling to find anything that isn't a company organised tour. We are a group of 6, travelling in July.

Thanks for the help!

Edit: I've contacted Richard who has been recommended by many of this forum, however he is busy on the dates I need.

In Dunhuang and Jiayuguan, hiring a private driver is one of the most convenient ways to explore the main attractions, especially when traveling in a group of six. The distances between scenic sites in Gansu can be significant, and public transportation options are limited, so private transport provides both flexibility and comfort.

There are a few ways to find reliable private drivers in Dunhuang and Jiayuguan, even if some of the more well-known ones (like Richard) are fully booked. Many local drivers offer customized itineraries and are familiar with the main tourist spots, including the Mogao Caves, Mingsha Sand Dunes, Yadan National Geopark, and the Jiayuguan Fortress.

Option 1: Arrange through your hotel or guesthouse

Most hotels and guesthouses in Dunhuang and Jiayuguan can help arrange private drivers for day trips or multi-day itineraries. They often work with trustworthy local drivers who know the routes well and are accustomed to tourists.

  • Ask your hotel in Dunhuang to arrange a van or minibus for your group. Vehicles that accommodate 6–7 passengers are common.
  • Typical rates range from 600–1000 RMB per day, depending on distance and route.
  • Drivers usually wait for you at each attraction and are flexible about timing.

Option 2: Use Chinese travel platforms or WeChat groups

If you are comfortable using Chinese apps, you can find local drivers through travel platforms such as Mafengwo (马蜂窝) or Ctrip (携程). Some English-speaking drivers or small agencies advertise there and offer private car services tailored for foreign visitors.

  • Search “敦煌 包车” (Dunhuang private car) or “嘉峪关 包车” (Jiayuguan private car) on these platforms.
  • You can communicate through WeChat once you find a suitable driver — most are used to international travelers and may use translation apps if needed.
  • Many drivers offer multi-day packages that include both Dunhuang and Jiayuguan, saving time and cost.

Option 3: Hire through local tourism centers or small agencies

In Dunhuang city, several small tour offices near the railway station and downtown area provide private driver services. You can negotiate rates directly on-site. These agencies often have a roster of experienced drivers familiar with both Dunhuang and Jiayuguan routes.

  • Many offices near Shazhou Night Market and Dunhuang Hotel area can arrange drivers with short notice.
  • For reference, Dunhuang to Jiayuguan (one-way, including sightseeing stops) usually costs around 800–1200 RMB for a van.
  • It’s common for drivers to include stops at Yumen Pass (玉门关) or the Great Wall of Han Dynasty ruins if you’re traveling between the two cities.

Sample one-day itinerary ideas with a private driver:

  • In Dunhuang: Visit Mogao Caves in the morning (reserve tickets in advance), then explore Mingsha Sand Dunes and Crescent Lake in the afternoon, finishing with sunset views over the desert.
  • Between Dunhuang and Jiayuguan: Stop at Yadan National Geopark, Yumen Pass, and the ancient Han Great Wall ruins before reaching Jiayuguan.
  • In Jiayuguan: Explore Jiayuguan Fortress, the Hanging Great Wall, and the Great Wall Museum.

When hiring a private driver, it’s a good idea to confirm the itinerary, total cost (including fuel and parking fees), and start/finish times in advance. Some drivers may ask for a small deposit via WeChat or Alipay.

In summary, the easiest way to secure a driver for your July trip is to contact your accommodation in both Dunhuang and Jiayuguan well in advance, as this is peak travel season. If you prefer to plan ahead online, platforms like Ctrip or Mafengwo can also connect you with reputable local drivers who can accommodate your group comfortably.
