Best Running Trails?

Can anyone suggest a good place for a long run (~10 miles)? Preferably a paved area in a park but a relatively flat trail would also work. Just hoping for something other than a main road. Thank you!

Helen, Georgia is a small town with charming alpine-style streets, but finding a long, flat paved running trail can be a bit challenging. Most of the nearby trails are in natural areas and can be hilly, reflecting the Appalachian foothills.

For a roughly 10-mile run, here are some options you might consider:

  • Chattahoochee River Recreation Area: About 10–15 minutes from Helen, this area has several paved paths and gravel trails along the river. You can loop sections to reach your desired distance. The terrain is generally flat with occasional gentle inclines.
  • Unicoi State Park: Offers multiple trails that are mostly packed dirt and gravel. While not fully paved, the trails are well-maintained and scenic. You can combine the Anna Ruby Falls Trail with other loops to reach a longer distance. Note that some parts are hilly.
  • Local streets in Helen: If you prefer paved surfaces, you could map a route using the quieter side streets in Helen and surrounding neighborhoods. This would allow you to avoid heavy traffic and still achieve a longer mileage loop.

Additional tips:

  • Consider running early in the morning to avoid tourist traffic, especially in Helen’s downtown area.
  • Use a GPS running app to map your route and ensure you reach your target mileage without repeating too many sections.
  • If you enjoy nature but want a flatter route, combining sections along the Chattahoochee River Recreation Area and nearby country roads can give a nice mix of pavement and gentle terrain.

While Helen may not have a dedicated 10-mile paved running trail, creative use of local streets and nearby park paths can give you a safe and scenic run of the distance you want.
