HOLO Senior Card or Cash?

Do you need a HOLO senior card to ride the bus at reduced fares or can you just pay the reduced senior fare by showing your driver's license? We're staying at Hale Koa Hotel and plan to use the bus during our stay.

To answer your question about the HOLO Senior Card, yes, you will need the actual card to qualify for the reduced senior fare on Oahu’s buses. Simply showing your driver's license is not enough to get the discounted rate. The HOLO Senior Card is specifically designed for seniors to access the lower fare, and you must have it to pay the reduced fare when boarding the bus.

If you plan to use the bus frequently during your stay at Hale Koa Hotel, here are your options:

  • Apply for a HOLO Senior Card in advance (you can apply online or at various locations on Oahu).
  • Once you have the card, it will allow you to tap on and off the bus to pay the reduced fare.
  • If you don't have the HOLO card, you would have to pay the regular fare, which is a bit higher for seniors without the card.

If you’re only planning to use the bus occasionally, purchasing a standard fare might be easier. However, if you’re planning on using it frequently, the HOLO Senior Card will be more cost-effective. You can get a temporary card at the Honolulu Department of Transportation or any designated vendors around Oahu.

Enjoy your time in Honolulu, and I hope this clears up the details for you!
