Dodgers game from Hyatt Huntington Beach
We are doing a family baseball trip with family of 5 July/Aug. Staying 4 nights in San Diego (Cardinals at Padres) and then driving up to Huntington Beach Hyatt for 2 nights. Angels game on Sunday afternoon (driving) then the Cardinals v. Dodgers on Monday August 4th - we will have a rental car but also read we could take a train to Union Station for the Dodgers shuttle? Any preference (me, wife and 9/5/3 year old) or suggestions?
For your Dodgers game on Monday, August 4th, traveling from Hyatt Huntington Beach with a rental car versus using public transit and the Dodgers shuttle each have pros and cons, especially with young children (ages 9, 5, and 3).
Driving directly to Dodger Stadium:
- The drive from Huntington Beach to Dodger Stadium is roughly 40–50 miles, but depending on traffic it can take 1.5–2 hours on a weekday. Traffic in Los Angeles on a Monday afternoon and early evening can be heavy.
- Parking at Dodger Stadium is convenient but costs around $30–$50 per vehicle, and you may still need to walk 10–20 minutes from some lots to the stadium entrance.
- Driving gives you flexibility to leave early if the kids get tired and to stop for breaks or meals along the way.
Taking the train to Union Station and using the Dodgers Shuttle:
- You could drive to Anaheim or a nearby Metrolink station, park there, and take the train to Union Station in downtown LA. From Union Station, the Dodgers Shuttle runs frequently on game days and drops you near the stadium.
- This option avoids LA freeway traffic stress and the hassle of parking at the stadium, which can be a relief with small kids.
- However, with a 3-year-old, the extra transfers and train timing might feel long or complicated, and the train schedules will need to align with your arrival time at the stadium.
- The shuttle still requires some walking and standing in lines, which may be tiring for the youngest children.
Suggested approach for a family with small children:
- Consider leaving early in the morning and driving directly to the stadium, giving you full control of timing and comfort stops. Plan for traffic by allowing extra time.
- If you want to avoid driving stress entirely and are comfortable with a slightly longer travel day, the train + Dodgers Shuttle can be fun, especially if the kids enjoy trains, but make sure the timing works smoothly with naps and meals.
- Bring snacks, water, sunscreen, and hats, since both options involve walking and waiting outdoors for part of the trip.
In short, for convenience and flexibility with a 3-year-old, driving is likely the simpler choice, but the shuttle option can reduce stress if you want to avoid LA traffic and stadium parking hassles.
