Hotel taxes

Hi, I have booked a suite for 7 nights at the Venetian hotel. The agent I booked through when paying the balance for the suite informed me that as well as resort fees, I will have a 12% accomodatiom tax and 13.5 % local government tax added to my final bill.

This was not something I had budgeted, but I also felt the agent seemed a little unsure when telling me this.

Could anybody confirm if this is correct or normal practice please.

Yes, the information your agent provided is correct and reflects standard practice in Las Vegas, especially at major Strip resorts like the Venetian. When booking a hotel in Las Vegas, the nightly room rate is typically supplemented by several additional charges beyond the base rate. These can include:

  • Resort fees: Nearly all major Las Vegas hotels charge a mandatory resort fee, which covers amenities such as Wi-Fi, gym access, pool access, and local calls. This is separate from the room rate.
  • Accommodation (room) tax: A state-mandated tax on the cost of the room, currently around 12% for Las Vegas hotels.
  • Local government tax/fees: Additional city or county taxes that can range around 13–14%, depending on the property and location.

So for a 7-night stay, these taxes and fees can significantly increase the total cost beyond what was quoted as the base room rate. It is common for travel agents to mention the resort fee but sometimes less common for them to provide the exact total tax percentage unless asked specifically.

Additional tips to keep in mind:

  • Always ask for the “total all-in price” including resort fees and taxes when booking, to avoid surprises at check-in.
  • These taxes and fees are standard across the Strip, so even booking directly through the hotel will include them.
  • Tip: Review your final booking confirmation or invoice, as it should break down the room rate, resort fees, and applicable taxes clearly.

Summary: The Venetian and most Las Vegas hotels will charge both a resort fee and combined room/local taxes totaling approximately 25–26% extra on top of your nightly rate. This is normal and expected practice, so you should budget accordingly for your stay.
